A doula is a total-care birthing professional who helps the mother in all phases of childbirth. Before the baby is born, a doula will help the mother feel both physically and emotionally comfortable during her pregnancy. Throughout labor and birth (hospital, home or birth center; natural, medicated or surgical), the doula is present to provide support and guidance. After the baby is born, a doula helps new parents by demonstrating practical newborn care and by supporting the feeding methods the mother has chosen to use. A doula also helps the new father gain a higher level of confidence in caring for his new baby. | Services | | Home visits to provide the following: | | » Prenatal: | • | Initial interview at no cost | • | Prenatal consultations | • | Lending libraries | • | Birth Plan counseling | • | 24-hour phone and email support as needed | • | Provide information about risks and benefits of birthing options | | | » In Labor: | • | Continuous support during labor | • | Massage | • | Techniques for relaxation and visualization | • | Help partner with suggestions and reassurances | • | Lending of birth ball | • | Reminders of positions and comfort measures | • | Birth photography | | | » Postpartum: | • | Assistance with initial breastfeeding | • | Postpartum follow-up visit to clarify events and answer questions | • | Photography | |
