Birth Doulas

A doula is a total-care birthing professional who helps the mother in all phases of childbirth. Before the baby is born, a doula will help the mother feel both physically and emotionally comfortable during her pregnancy. Throughout labor and birth  (hospital, home or birth center; natural, medicated or surgical), the doula is present to provide support and guidance.

After the baby is born, a doula helps  new parents by demonstrating practical newborn care and by supporting the feeding methods the mother has chosen to use. A doula also helps the new father gain a higher level of confidence in caring for his new baby.

Katherine Anderson, Childbirth Educator and Labor Support Doula, is a Northern California native residing in Dobbs Ferry with her husband Calvin and their two children Rebecca and Gabriel. The birth of her daughter was a defining moment for Katherine. "I knew at that instant that I wanted to be with and help guide expectant women in the amazing journey of pregnancy, labor, and birth. I believe that when women are allowed to trust in the innate wisdom of their bodies, giving birth can be an experience that is both empowering and life changing." Katherine's philosophies and beliefs about pregnancy and birth are inspired by the works of Sheila Kitzinger, Dr. Michel Odent, Ina May Gaskin, Gayle Peterson, and by the many wise women she has trained with through the International Childbirth Education Association. In addition to her work as a childbirth educator and doula, she is a violist with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

Jen's calling to the world of childbirth was inspired by the life-altering births of her two daughters, and the overwhelming support she received from her midwives, childbirth educator and doulas during her pregnancies, deliveries and beyond. Upon realizing she could no longer suppress her desire to support other women during their childbearing years, she left her graphic design business and received her childbirth education and labor support training through the Childbirth Education Association (CEA) and Doulas of North America (DONA), respectively. Jen recognizes that when a woman is knowledgeable about the options available to her during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and when she is well-supported physically and emotionally, she increases her chances of having a positive birth experience. Acknowledging that everyone's approach to childbirth is intensely personal, Jen customizes care for every one of her clients. Her teaching philosophy encourages women to make informed decisions about their care and the care of their babies by presenting comprehensive, fact-based information in an open, non-judgmental environment . Jen lives with her family in Northern Westchester, NY.

Catherine is a certified Birth Doula living in Northern Westchester with her husband and daughter Vivian. Having come from a very large family where babies were almost always being born, she became fascinated with pregnancy and childbirth. “Whenever a sister or a loved one was in labor, I always wanted to go and be with them.” Catherine always loved to listen to her aunt and mother’s stories of giving birth to their children, as well as their stories of supporting their daughters through childbirth. After her daughter was born, Catherine decided to leave her profession in museum administration to start a new path as a Birth Doula. She is honored to be a doula and honored to provide support to expectant families on this unique and exciting journey. Catherine is also fluent in the German language as she lived there independently for more than four years.
